Rumi Abukar
Rumi’s route into tutoring grew out of working directly with students. Her story continues to shape Minds in Tutoring’s personal approach to academic support.
Rumi originally planned a career in pharmaceuticals or drug development. After graduating during the pandemic, she continued into a master’s degree. Throughout that period, tutoring remained a constant — something she enjoyed and kept coming back to.
That experience led her towards teaching and back to her former secondary school as a trainee teacher. Minds in Tutoring grew from that same enthusiasm for helping others learn.
Her brother and co-founder, Khalid Abukar, began teaching and helping grow the business in his first year at university. He went on to graduate in Computer Science with upper second-class honours (2:1) and continues to teach alongside Rumi.
Today, Minds in Tutoring offers personalised online tuition. Lessons combine subject knowledge with exam technique, time management and the confidence to tackle difficult questions.
We adapt explanations and materials to the individual, using resources such as worksheets, videos and flashcards. As exams approach, the focus includes structured revision and practice under timed conditions.

In a story Rumi shared on LinkedIn, a student worried about her chances of studying medicine worked on rebuilding Biology foundations and applying Chemistry knowledge. Together, they used exam-paper analysis, timed questions and detailed corrections.
The student achieved an A in Biology, A* in Chemistry and A* in Psychology, followed by an offer to study Medicine at the University of Manchester.
